Icelandic Flowers


As you can see from most of our pictures, Iceland is grey a lot of the time. The terrain is all created from volcanic ash and it can take thousands of years for lichens to break up rocks, then for moss to cover the rocks to a depth that allows flowers.  In addition, the harsh climate (it can snow in June) means only hardy plants survive.  Given that, the variety of flowers in Iceland amazed us. 

These look familiar!




This one is called cottongrass.






Blue lobelia-  we may fill our front yard with it when we get home.
