Saturday, March 17: In Pursuit of Tigers

We had two safaris scheduled today.  Since Ranthambore is a tiger sanctuary, that was our main focus.  Tigers, however, are very territorial and a fairly large area will likely have only one.  Fortunately there are other beautiful creatures and we got many pictures of them on the first trip.

Tiger TRACKS. That counts, doesn't it?

The second trip after lunch, the guide told us, would be to a more distant area and the ride would be “bouncy”.  He wasn’t kidding.  The roads were so badly rutted and the shock absorbers so minimal that anything resting on your seat landed on the floor in minutes.  Since we were focused on getting near the likely feeding areas quickly there were few stops.  Finally, after almost 2 hours of nonstop bumping, we drew near an area with a cluster of vehicles.  Sure enough, a tiger was sleeping under a tree.

Excitement rippled through the group every time it showed signs of waking up.  (The guide said it was likely a male between 18 and 24 months old.)  I tried to get a few shots as it lay under the tree.  After 20 minutes or so, he finally got up and walked behind a rock, but not before passing in full view of the crowd.  The shots I took under the tree were useless but I was very happy to find when I got back to my room that when I enlarged and cropped a picture from when he crossed in front of us, I had a very good image.
